Speaker to Parliament Dr Jiko Luveni has ruled against allegations by Opposition MP Semesa Karavaki that the Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum had misled the House during the Parliament sitting in May.

During the Parliament sitting on May 21, Mr Karavaki had alleged that Mr Sayed-Khaiyum intentionally misled the House when answering to a question that was raised the previous day.

The question by Opposition member, Ratu Isoa Tikoca   was: “In the absence of the FICAC Commissioner, who does the Deputy Commissioner report to and which ministry does FICAC come under?”

The A-G responded and said that under the Constitution, the Deputy Commissioner reports to the President.

But Karavaki then submitted documents to the Speaker to support his claim.
Dr Luveni said there was nothing in the document that supported Mr Karavaki’s allegations.

She ruled that the Attorney-General had not deliberately misled the House and she would not refer the case to the Privileges Committee.

Rotuma petition

In another ruling, Dr Luveni ruled that the petition signed by the people of Rotuma would be heard by the Standing Committee on Social Affairs.

Opposition Leader, Ro Teimumu Kepa tabled the petition that was signed by 577 Rotumans who were concerned with the Rotuma Bill and Rotuma Lands Bill that was tabled in Parliament during the sitting in May.

Dr Luveni said it was up to the Standing Committee on Social Affairs to decide how to deal with both the bills and the petition and report back to the House.

Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum had questioned whether the petition intervened with the work of the standing committee.

The petition has now been tabled and assigned to the relevant standing committee.
