Our Leaders Condemn Sex Attack

There was widespread condemnation from political leaders after the horrific sex attack on a nine-year old student at Nakasi, Nasinu, on Wednesday.

Even the Minister for Health, Jone Usamate, mentioned it during his ministerial statement in Parliament yesterday.

His statement focused on the deteriorating health of Fijians. We asked our leaders in Parliament to comment on the attack that was featured on the front page of the Fiji Sun yesterday.

Here are their statements:

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama

“The latest I got from the Police is that there is a big team out there looking. It’s very horrifying, I know how the parents must be feeling. I hope the Police catch this guy today.”

Leader of the Opposition Ro Teimumu Kepa

“I haven’t read it. You know our policy. We don’t read your paper.”

National Federation Party leader Biman Prasad

“No stone should be left unturned to get the perpetrators and justice given to the victims and the family.”

Minister for Health Jone Usamate

“As a parent, this morning I talked to my granddaughter and told her to watch out for strangers. We need to teach our children about these things, and hopefully, get the right values, in others. It’s very scary, especially for those of us who live in Nakasi.”

Assistant Minister for Health Veena Bhatnagar

“We are looking after the victim in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), but at that moment, Police are investigating and I don’t want to comment at the moment.”

Chairman of Standing Committee for Justice, Law and Human Rights Ashneel Sudhakar

“It’s pretty bad and I think the penalties for these kind of offences should be increased.”

National Federation Party MP Tupou Draunidalo

“I haven’t had a look at the law but they should consider raising the tariff for these kinds of sentences.”

Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts, Mahendra Reddy

“I am on top of it. I have been talking to the Police. We need to kill this monster of an issue.”
