Police have bolstered their team from 30 to 40 officers in the hunt for two suspects who allegedly raped a nine-year-old Nakasi girl on Tuesday.

The incident happened when the victim was on her way home from school when she was grabbed by two men, dragged several metres and brutally attacked in the bushes.

Assistant Commissioner of Police and chief of investigations and intelligence Henry Brown in a press conference yesterday said the incident was shocking.

“On the nature of this crime, the family is shocked and the community of Nakasi is shocked. The whole of Fiji listening to this news are shocked,” ACP Brown said.

“We have an initial team of 30 detectives on the ground which is inclusive of our scene of crime officers, especially our sexual offence specialists on the ground. We are putting all our efforts here to try to bring these perpetrators to justice,” ACP Brown said.

“The victim has been traumatised and has received injuries,” he said.

He appealed to the members of the public, not only the Nakasi community, but the nation as a whole that this case would require assistance from public to solve.

“Police may not be able to do this alone,” ACP Brown said.

The victim is recovering at CWM Hospital in Suva. shahani mala
