The 1984 Sugar Industry Act will soon be changed, says the Prime Minister and Minister for the Sugar Industry Voreqe Bainimarama.

The Prime Minister was responding to Opposition member Prem Singh on what did the Fiji Sugar Corporation chairman mean by their statement that the Sugar Master Award is outdated.

“We are now in a sugarcane industry not the sugar industry, there’s quite a difference,” Mr Bainimarama said.

“We are trying to change the Sugar Industry Act and that is why the sugarcane industry has involved a consultant to engage in consultation with relevant stakeholders,” he said.

The Prime Minister added that they would be diversifying into sugarcane- related products and such matters needed to be explicitly covered.
