The Fijian women won their fourth Pacific Games basketball title after they defeated American Samoa 75-61 victory last Saturday.

The 2011 bronze medalists, who last won the tournament in Suva in 2007, recovered from a faltering start to secure a commanding victory.   Fijian captain Valeria Nainima was the star for her side, racking up 16 points, while teammate Mikaelar Whippy chipped in with 15.

“It’s an emotional moment, we are so happy,” Nainima said.

“It took a lot out of us today and we are glad we came away with the win.

“It’s a big deal to us.

“To get this win is to give back to all those hardworking people who tried to change Basketball Fiji.

“This means a lot to me; the last time I played for Fiji was eight years ago. I don’t know whether I will be making 2019 Pacific Games because I’m not getting any younger but to lead these young girls is amazing,” Nanima said.

Head coach Laisiasa Puamau said their main message was to play for each other.

“My main message to the girls was teamwork and we have to play for each other.

“ We want to thank our sponsors BLK, Goodman Fielder, Uprising Resort and Coca-Cola Amatil Fiji for always supporting our national teams and our local competitions,” Puamau said.

Tahiti ended their campaign on a high, recovering from their semifinal defeat to Fiji by beating PNG to win the bronze medal with a 62-51 victory.
