Villagers of Nakoroba, Vaturova, Cakaudrove, are exemplary in the fight against climate change and engaging in rural development projects.

Since January, the villagers have been building their seawall to protect their village shoreline.

They are building the seawall without any outside assistance – no Government or foreign help.

Village headman Ilai Vasulevu said, “We want to be independent and teach the villagers to help themselves.

“Funds from village soli and fundraising events are used to build the seawall. The project is a success.

“We use resources surrounding the village like sand from the beach, dead corals, rocks and materials we buy from the money we collect from our fundraising.

“Construction stopped for a while because of lack of money, but we raised funds again and have continued building our seawall.

“The project has taught our children to be independent and be responsible towards our village.”

Mr Vasulevu said they would seek Government’s help if the need arise.

They recently raised $6000 to continue the project.
