Ba man Jiten Kumar, 45, has been bedridden since his leg was severely injured during a car accident on May 22.

Mr Kumar, of Tauvegavega in Ba, said he was walking to the shop when the incident happened.

Since then Mr Kumar, a taxi driver, has had mechanical gears attached to his left limb.

“I only remember waking up in the hospital bed and feeling nothing at first; maybe because of the shock of what had happened,” he said.

Mr Kumar said a few days later the pain kicked in.

“My life was turned upside down by the accident. I have been driving for the last 16 years and had never hit anyone; it’s surprising that I was bumped,” Mr Kumar said.

He lives with his sickly mum Bagh Wati, wife Rohini Lata, son Jashnil Maharaj, 20, and daughter Rashika Maharaj, 18.

But Mr Kumar still bravely moves around his home in a wheelchair.

“The doctors have said by the end of August they would remove the nuts and bolts to be replaced with a plate then they would cement his leg,” he said.

“I am not too sure what the outcome is; maybe I’ll be fitted with a prosthetic leg; life will not be the same but I hope to return to work after Christmas.”
