Ikale Tahi captain Nili Latu is confident the young Tongan players will deliver when the 2015 World Rugby Pacific Nations Cup kicks off this Saturday.

The 33 year-old flanker said it was a positive step forward for them.

“We’ve got a lot of young guys coming through and that’s really great for Tongan rugby as well. We’re here to support them in any way during PNC so it’s something that we’re all looking forward to.

“We’ve got a lot of players that are injured and through club commitments have taken off the year. But I guess it’s a very exciting time for our young players as well to step up and take the opportunity.

“Basically this is the way to the World Cup and everybody is going to get tested in PNC. It’s really simple. If you don’t make the cut here, then you won’t be on that flight to the World Cup.”

The former Chiefs/Hurricanes player didn’t mince his words as he made clear the Friendly Islanders’ intention to win this year’s tournament.

“To definitely win it. It’s a big challenge against Fiji. They had a great start last week with their campaign so it’s going to be a big ask for our boys. So now we’ve just got to get together and have that one session on Thursday and get ready for Fiji.

“You’ve got to be confident. You don’t turn up to a game thinking you’re going to lose. We’re confident in what we have done as a team and the way we have prepared, getting the boys together in this short time and getting ready for Fiji.

“I guess every team in the PNC is going to be strong. For us, we’ve got to take one game at a time then moving on from there. But, first and foremost it’s Fiji this week and then we look forward for the next game.”

Making his debut in the red jumper back in 2006, Latu also featured in the Pacific Islanders team that toured Wales, Scotland and Ireland in November 2006.
