Saweni Beach in Lautoka is undergoing beautification under the combinet effort of the Fiji National University (FNU), Reforest Fiji, and the Rainforest Foundation.

FNU Assistant Professor – Department of Environmental Science, Ajantha Perera said the aim was to create a people-friendly space at the beach where families could relax without fear, and allow their children to run around and enjoy themselves.

“It is a place of recreation for most people. In the recent past, the number of people coming to Saweni has decreased due to the fact that Saweni has become an unsafe place. Overgrown bushes and garbage spread among them does not attract many visitors to come for relaxation,” Ms Perera said.

“Around five hundred valuable plants will be planted around Saweni Beach. The thick bushes will be removed to create more space for planting.”

She said around 60 women from the Saru Assemblies of God (AOG) Women’s Group were expected to take part in the tree planting and mangrove planting campaign.

About 1000 mangrove seedlings will be provided by the Department of Forestry.

“The book of Genesis clearly says that God has handed over the responsibility to man to take care of the earth. But today men have become too greedy and irresponsible that the commandments given in the book of Genesis are mostly ignored,” she said.

Ms Perera hopes that religious groups will join hands to create a people-friendly environment on the beach.

The campaign will be held today from 10am-12 at Saweni Beach. For any information: contact 9066161 or email: ajantha.perera@fnu.ac.fj.
