Copeland Battles Odds To Win Gold At Port Moresby

Leslie Copeland won gold medal in the men’s javelin event on Monday night at Sir John Guise Stadium.

The Savusavu man threw a distance of 70.31 metres to claim gold while his challenger from Wallis and Futuna Tipotio Vahaafenua Vito was second (65.41) and New Caledonia Erwan Cassier third (61.14).

The former Marist Brothers High School explained the challenges he had to go through to win gold.

“I was injured but I worked really hard to win gold medal, the competition was tough I had to dig deep.

“I tried my best every gold medal is special but for this one I’m glad that I came all the way from Fiji to PNG to win gold,” Copeland said.

The event was even more challenging when Copeland in his first attempt failed to raise the white flag as his foot passed the line.

“I want to thank God for giving me this talent and my family for their support,” he said.
