Director of Sugar Viliame Gucake was appointed acting Permanent Secretary for Sugar by the Public Service Commission (PSC) yesterday.

He takes over from PSC Permanent Secretary Parmesh Chand, who was appointed to act in the post following the death of former PS Sugar, Manasa Vaniqi.

“It is very humbling to be appointed in the critical time of the industry and I am thankful to the Government for making that decision,” Mr Gucake said.

He said guidance he received from Mr Vaniqi and Mr Chand was valuable and would help him a lot.

“It is a big challenge. I remember during a Sugar consultation at Penang High School with the growers in 2010, the Prime Minister said that the Sugar Industry is here to stay. That statement has stuck and valuable resources from the Government in terms of funding had been used to make it happen.”

He said he would continue to work with stakeholders and the strategic action plan to improve the sugarcane production level to the mark of three million tonnes.

“There has been a lot of uncertainty surrounding the industry over the years. The downward spiral of production of sugarcane and sugar has been shared with the stakeholders.”

PSC chairman Vishnu Mohan said the Sugar Industry needed fulltime attention because it had been facing enormous challenges.

“There is a lot of work to be done on reforms in the industry and on ground co-ordination with stakeholders. As such, it requires a dedicated person based at the Ministry in the West,” he said.
