Our soldiers in the Golan Heights held a memorial service to remember their late comrade, Staff Sergeant Peniele Racolo.

The service was conducted last Thursday  at the Camp Ziouani Drill Square.

Brigadier-General Tony Hanlon (Deputy Force Commander) and Chief Mission Support Bernard Lee laid the wreath on behalf of United Nations Disengagement Force (UNDOF). Commanding Officer Fiji Battalion, Lieutenant-Colonel Isoa Loanakadavu laid the wreath on behalf of Fiji Batt.

A statement from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF)media team in Camp Ziouani said, “The occassion was very solemn and emotional as comrades were in tears missing the departure of the late Staff Sergeant.

“All UNDOF Officers were present including the Senior Staff Officers and Israel soldiers.”

The late staff sergeant Racolo collapsed and died during a fitness test at Camp Ziouani.

He was from Natuva Village, Verata in Tailevu.

He was 43 years old. He was due to return later this month along with close to 300 soldiers on their normal annual rotation.
