Spreading Economic Activity Is The Way Forward: Chand

Spreading economic activity to locations with vital resources is both efficient and equitable.

This was suggested by the Professor of Finance in the School of Business at the University of New South Wales Satish Chand.

He made these remarks during the Fiji Economy Update 2015 held at University of the South Pacific Laucala Campus yesterday.

Mr Chand said: “Vanua Levu has been hollowed out through expiring leases, emigration and decline in sugar industry.

“I have suggested that Savusavu with its harbour and natural surroundings has the potential to be cruise ship destination.”

Mr Chand has stressed that the government has been playing a big role in assisting in the development of the economy through reforms.

His presentation highlighted the highs and lows the Fijian economy.

He said: “Economic progress made since 2006 has  been patchy.” But he added.

“Good times nonetheless provide the space for tough reforms to address the difficult issues of employment, access to services and poverty.”

Mr Chand also suggested in order to fully utilise Fiji’s opportunities we must tap into our resources.

“This can be done through making better use of idle land, unemployed or under-employed labour, and capital to generate increase output.”
