Vodafone Flying Fijians wing Asaeli Tikoirotuma is ready to step up if given the call to start in the 2015 Pacific Nations Cup opening game against Tonga.

The 29-year-old Ono-i-Lau man made the comment ahead of this weekend’s clash at the ANZ Stadium after training yesterday.

“Definitely playing in front of the home crowd is always a big thing representing your family and your country,” he said.

“So if given a chance this week, I will definitely be happy to accept and make use of that opportunity.

“To be honest, I haven’t played for the last six to eight weeks. These last three weeks, having conditioning training with the trainers has helped me a lot. But that won’t guarantee me running around for the full 80 minutes if I do play.

“But if it does happen, I’ll take the opportunity to showcase what I’ve achieved in these last three weeks with the team.”

The Harlequins winger admitted it was a big blow losing skipper Akapusi Qera and powerhouse wing Nemani Nadolo but the whole team was ready to step up to the plate.

“I think losing Nemani and Qera, that’s a big hole to fill for the team. But the boys have been in camp for these last two weeks and we’ve all been prepping. Whoever goes on, there’ll be a new Akapusi Qera and Nemani Nadolo there. So everyone is ready to step up.”

Looking forward to Saturday’s game, Tikoirotuma was anticipating meeting an old Chiefs teammate.

“There’s one guy that I’m looking forward to seeing and playing against and that’s Arizona Taumalolo. That’s who I played with at the Chief and it’s good to have someone you know to play against.”

Tikoirotuma made his debut in the white jumper in the 2013 when he was named in the squad for the end-of-the-year tour, having played a pivotal role in the Chiefs’ two consecutive Super Rugby title wins, in 2012 and 2013.

The Vodafone Flying Fijians-Tonga clash kicks off at 3pm.
