The Fiji Sevashram Sangha was among the first organisations to donate food and other items, to families whose houses were destroyed in a fire at Barnett Lane, Howell Road in Suva on Tuesday afternoon.

Swami Sanyuktanand led a group from the Sangha that visited the families yesterday.

The group donated blankets, sheets, quilts, clothes, pillows, oil, flour, rice, noodles and various other food items.

Swami Sanyuktanand said they wanted to help the families after reading about what they went through in yesterday’s Fiji Sun.

Shiu Mati, 69, whose house was among those that were fully destroyed in the fire said she was grateful with the overwhelming support the public had been showing.

“We are very happy with the number of people that have been coming to help us. Last night the Minister for Local Government, Housing and Environment Parveen  Kumar came to see us and took us to the TISI temple here in Howell Road for shelter,” Mrs Mati said.

“He also brought us blankets and arranged for our dinner and even gave us some cash and we are so happy.

“Some other individuals came this morning (yesterday) to supply us with other essential items that we really need at this time,” she said.It is also understood that Mr Kumar had handed them the Government’s Emergency Assistance for House Fire Victims forms in order to be assisted by Government.

Meanwhile, National Fire Authority chief executive officer John O’Connor said they were working with the Police at the fire scene to determine the cause of the fire.
