The headman (turaga-ni-koro) of Kalabu Village, Jone Tuboto, yesterday proposed that they wanted to start a village tourist project.

He told the team from the Department of Strategic Plannning, made up of Paula Cirikiyasawa and Poasa Naimila that currently tourists come to the village and were entertained by the women.

“This project is organised by the women and they get the money,” Mr Tuboto said.

However, he said there were many other attractions that included two caves and some waterfalls that they needed to show the tourists.

“We also have a few pools which are good for swimming.”

He said what they needed was for Government to help construct access roads with lights to the caves and the pools.

“We also need lights in the caves,” he said.

Mr Tuboto also made a proposal for the village to have a stand-by water reservoir.

He said they had a water source that could be developed to fill a reservoir and they would only use this when they had water problems.

“Kalabu is a huge village and with our new boundary it included many settlements right up to Kinoya Village and we always experience low water pressure.”

He said they did not want to use water tanks as they could easily be damaged.

Mr Tuboto asked if they could use cards and not meters for their electricity.

“We prefer to use cards as some villages do.”

Meanwhile villager Kasanita Wati made a proposal for a kindergarten at Kalabu Village.

She said they didn’t want the rape attack at Nakasi to happen to any of their children as now most children were attending a kindergarten outside the village.

While some settlements in Kalabu had their own kindergartens Mr Tuboto said a kindergarten school would soon be opened at the Kalabu Primary School and he asked all other kindergartens within the village boundary to close and attend the new one.
