21,029 Approved For Free Water

The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) has approved 21,029 applications under the Free Water Scheme.

The authority, to date, has received 22,577 applications for free water from across the country.

WAF, in a statement, said registration to benefit from the Government scheme was still open.

“A total of 8270 applications have been received from the Central Division, 11,165 from the West and 3142 from the North,” the authority said.

“Out of the 22,577 applications received so far, 21,029 have been approved.”

The remainder is undergoing vetting process, the statement said.

The calculation for free water will be based on an average of five members per household and WAF has extended its opening hours in Suva from 7am to 7pm during weekdays and 8am to noon on Saturday.

WAF customer care outlets in Nausori, Labasa, Nadi and Lautoka will be open from 8am to 5pm on weekdays and 8am to noon on Saturdays.

People can visit their nearest WAF outlets and register since there has not been any timeline set for the closure of scheme.

The application has to be accompanied by documental proof about their earnings which will be assessed to determine whether they qualify to receive free water.

Under the Free Water Scheme, Fijians who earn $30,000 per household income or less annually will be entitled to 50 litres of water per person per day free of charge.
