Vodafone Flying Fijians captain Vereniki Goneva is ready to lead against the Tonga Ikale Tahi in the 2015 World Rugby Pacific Nations Cup opener at the ANZ Stadium today.

After the Captain’s run at the ANZ Stadium yesterday, the 31-year-old outside centre said it was an honour to be leading the national side for the very first time.

“I’ve captained my club team in the village as well as the Nadi team. But this will be my very first time to lead the Flying Fijians,” Goneva said.

“It’s not an easy task and I’m very humbled because there are more experienced players that could have taken up this role like Sunia Koto, Waqaniburotu, Gabiriele Lovobalavau or Napolioni Nalaga.

“So I’m grateful and honoured to be chosen this week. All my teammates have been very helpful to me throughout training, assisting me in my new role.”

The Leicester Tigers centre echoed sentiments made earlier in the week about the tough game the Friendly Islanders would bring.

“Everybody knows when we play Tonga or Samoa, it’s always tough so we’re ready to face them and play a great game of Pacific rugby.”

Goneva also urged fans to turn up today to show their support for both teams and not miss the chance to watch what is hoped to be a wonderful display of proud Pacific rugby.

Goneva was first called to national duties during the 2007-2008 Sevens World Series by then coach Waisale Serevi and debuted at the George Sevens, graduating to the 15s code in 2009 when he played his first PNC, making the 2011 RWC squad. The match kicks off at 3pm today.
