The nine-year-old Nakasi rape victim is happy and looking forward to moving to her new home in Suva today.

Her father said: “My daughter is very happy and she is ready to move to her new home.

“My daughter is still scared and she does not want to go to Nakasi.

“It is very difficult for me to move from Nakasi and adjust to a new place, but for my daughter’s happiness, we are ready to move to our new home.

“Even my wife is very scared and she does not want to stay in Nakasi.

“My daughter is fine now but we don’t discuss or talk about the incident to her.”

The girl’s grandfather said: “I am very sad because this is a very difficult moment for my family and for my granddaughter’s happiness; I am helping them to move to their new home.”

He again expressed his family’s gratitude towards the Government.

The Minister for Local Government, Housing and Environment, Parveen Kumar, took the girl’s parents and showed them two one-bedroom flats in Suva on Wednesday.

The address and details of the accommodation have been withheld for privacy and security reasons.

The flats are self contained with modern facilities and amenities, a farcry from their humble wooden rented house with no electricity in Nakasi.

The family will be staying there for six months rental free. After six months, the ministry will review what the way forward is for the family.
