Government’s knowledge-based society campaign continues to grow as more Fijian schools introduce computer literacy education.

Tuva Primary School in Nadroga joined the list last Friday after the Minister for Education, Mahendra Reddy, opened the school’s computer laboratory and the headteacher’s office.

The project follows fundraising by the management and the school family.

“It’s good to see a primary school where IT (information technology) education is introduced, where children start developing their IT skills. Today no child will be successful without IT skills,” Mr Reddy said.

“We are here for you. We want your dreams to come true. We will do everything to ensure our ministry and our staff on the ground will uphold the confidence and trust parents have bestowed on us to give your children the best quality education.”

Headteacher Subramani Krishna thanked the Ministry of Education for assisting the school.

“Government and the school management have helped make the vision a reality,” he said.

“They contributed and allowed flexibility in order for the school to achieve its vision for excellence in education.”

Mr Krishna said five computers would arrive this week to add to the 20 installed in the laboratory.

“This development will be a source of pride for us in letting students become more computer literate. We will do our best to work within the grant given by the Ministry of Education,” he said

The project cost $20,000.

“We started fundraising in 2008. In 2013 we decided to work on extending it to accommodate the students.”
