AD Patel College of Ba was crowned the winner of the 2015 National Energy Saver Model Competition organised by the Department Of Energy under its Public Outreach programme.

Principal Jalendra Prasad said the college was proud to be part of the competition which portrayed the theme for this year’s competition – “Do Fiji Proud, Be an Energy Saver”.

AD Patel College’s winning models was put together by four students Sidhant Ram, Kishan Sharma, Prasil Prakash, and Asnil Prakash under the supervision of the head of department of industrial arts Rajnesh Chand.

“Students were encouraged to participate and to broaden their knowledge on energy issues and to be critical to what our planet faces today with regard to the global warming phenomena, sea level rise, over exploitation of our natural resources and the inefficient use of energy,” Mr Prasad said.

The students constructed three models and the concepts that were used included windmill to generate electricity, wind water pump, methane gas from cow dung, wave electricity generator, air batteries, earth batteries, salt water batteries, solar powered lights, solar powered car, solar lawn mower, solar hovercraft, physio-electricity, road energy, and bicycle energy.

He said the assessment was done based on the structure, stability, materials used, mobility, working models function, appropriateness, concepts and relevance of the ideas and also linkages to the theme.

Meanwhile, each winning student was rewarded with a cheque of $100 and a tablet each as the national level winners in the competition the college was a recipient of a plaque and a cheque of $3000.
