Union Numbers

It would be interesting to see how many members are in the Fiji Trades Union Congress now. When it talks about representing workers in this country, just how much percentage is that?

One of the FTUC’s largest affiliates, the Fiji Public Service Association with its 3000 members, has stopped paying its fees. This means, technically it is no longer a member of the FTUC.

Anthony moves

Felix Anthony, the FTUC general secretary, was seen in the lift going up in Civic House in Suva last Friday.

Later he was seen heading to the office of the Minister for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations, Joji Konrote.

He was there, it is understood, to see if talks could be resumed with Government on the future of industrial relations in this country.

So good on him for seeking to break the impasse. He knows the implications if the impasse is not resolved.

Nasoso grumble

More rumblings have been heard about the Nasoso property that was said to have been sold for $100,000 instead of the book value of $200,000.

The authority of the trade union that sold it is now being questioned because the property was registered under the union’s co-operative.

When the co-operative was liquidated, the court told the trade union that it cannot take over all the properties managed by the co-operative because they are separate entities.

Now the trade union seems caught in a legal bind.
