Housing materials are being organised by the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation for the fire victims of Howell Road, Suva.

Minister Rosy Akbar visited the fire victims yesterday to assist the affected families.

The ministry was going to hand over chaeques to the victims however upon consultation with the families, they agreed to buy housing materials instead to help rebuild their homes since Shiu Mati and her family of seven are sleeping under a make-shift tarpaulin home.

“It’s is disheartening to see that it has been eight days now since the fire and the family are still sleeping under the tarpaulin,” Ms Akbar said.

“However, we are going to appeal to other stakeholders and see the best ways to assist these families.”

Apart from financial assistance to help them rebuild their lives, the Ministry is also providing basic food items, clothing, blankets more secured tents (short term assistance).

“If we provide cash, it can be used but the most important thing this families need right now is a shelter over their head and we will go the extra mile to provide them with assistance,” Ms Akbar said.

Meanwhile, Nadi Rotary Club and R C Manubhai is providing mattresses and blankets and other basic items to the families.

Ms Mati, 69, is also a social welfare recipient. She thanked the Minister for the visit and requested for immediate assistance.

Ms Akbar will be providing a tent for the family to live in until the housing materials are ready.

She is also appealing to the public to be compassionate and assist the victims get their lives back on track.
