Unions? Again

Some trade union leaders go to great lengths to reinforce their control over union affairs.  Starting last month, in one trade union, members of the executive council are paid a honorarium and sitting allowance.

This is the first time it’s being done. What’s the purpose?

To ensure that proposals by the union leader in question are rubber stamped without scrutiny, according to some members.

Are the council members’ employers aware that their workers are earning secondary income  and whether it is allowed in their job contracts?

TAXI! TAXI?

How many of the taxis on Denarau Island actually have the required insurance cover?

From what we hear not all. In case of an accident involving tourists things would not be good.

BASELESS

Many taxi operators are already embracing the proposed open base system. More and more Suva-based taxis are parked daily at the carpark of the Nakasi shopping centre, near Nausori, right in front of the newly opened Land Transport Authority (LTA) office.

An LTA officer told Mickey Bird the open base system is not law.

The officer’s efforts to tell a taxi driver to move fell on deaf ears. The driver had seen the high number of potential passengers. LTA head office needs to clarify the situation to avoid tension and potential clashes although competition is good for customers.
