A man is being interrogated by Police in connection with the rape of the Nakasi nine-year-old girl, Police sources said.

Police have officially said a few suspects have been interviewed but no one is in custody.

However, the Police sources – speaking on condition of not being identified because they are not authorised to speak to the media – say the man in question allegedly fitted the suspect’s description given by the victim.

It is alleged that the man had erased a tattoo thought to be of a green long neck bird on his leg remembered by the victim. Other details disclosed by her say the suspect walks with a distinct limp and has a dark mole on top of his right small finger, a boxed haircut with the sides of the head neatly shaven and a punk.

Unconfirmed reports say the man was picked up from Lautoka and brought to Nausori.

A crucial part of the investigation will be for the victim to identify the suspect before any charges are laid.

Meanwhile, Police chief of intelligence and investigations, Assistant Commissioner of Police Henry Brown, said they were still questioning few suspects and no one was in Police custody.

“Individuals who have come forward with information regarding the rape of the 9-year-old continue to be interviewed by investigators,” ACP Brown said.

“There are speculations that a suspect has been identified and arrested. However, this is not true at this point in time.

“Again we request the media’s understanding and co-operation in allowing our investigators to conduct their work and avoid speculation about the progress made in the investigations.”

Today is the 16th day since the girl was grabbed,  on her way home from school, dragged several metres and raped in bushes.
