Fiji hockey has switched its focus to the Oceania Olympic qualifiers in New Zealand in October.

The Fiji men’s and women’s team won gold in the 2015 Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea last week  and are now preparing for the Olympic qualifiers.

Fiji head coach Hector Smith said their first task now was now to select more players since only nine players travelled to PNG to participate in 5-a-side tournament.

“We will be identifying some additional talents at the end of the month since we will start again with 11-a-side.

“We only took nine players to PNG and we have to look for another nine players to also participate in regular competition,” Smith said.

FHF will be meeting today to draw up plans for the remaining major tournaments.

“We are having a meeting on Thursday (today) and we put down together a time table for both men and women so we need the support from public.

“In PNG we were winning 30-0, 35-1 we take the win but that doesn’t matter when matching the caliber of the teams we were playing against but now we are playing against top six in the world it’s not going to be easy,” Hector added.

The team will be working on retaining possession and fitness level.

“We will have to work on possession retention and fitness level, we want the reserves and players on the field to be fit,” Smith added.
