The students of International School Suva and Marist Brothers High School could become future parliamentarians.

Speaker to Parliament Dr Jiko Luveni  visited the two schools yesterday as part of the extensive civic education programme by Parliament.

At the International School Dr Luveni focused on the role of Parliament.

“We have lowered the voting age to 18 for students in secondary schools because in the 2018 election, they will be voting.

“Parliament is also aired on TV. Children and students must understand what is going on in Parliament,” she said.

In response, ISS student Abbas Jiwanji said: “I think Parliament is very important and I can imagine if we did not have Parliament then people would want to do whatever they want and break laws.”

Meanwhile, ISS Year 11 student Virkant Sigh said: “I think Parliament is where they come with two different teams, the Opposition and Government and they talk about issues.”

At MBHS, students questioned Dr Luveni on how Bills were passed in Parliament.

“Government occupies the most number of seats in Parliament which means that they will always have an advantage.

“We have a very strong Opposition and this is healthy because they will help to keep Government in line by scrutinising the work that they do,” Dr Luveni said.

Marist headboy Christian Ali said the visit by the Speaker was very inspiring.

“We are so fortunate to be able to be part of the programme and with what has been said today.

“We hope to become the best we can be,” he said.
