The Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama, yesterday commended the Fiji Navy during its 40th anniversary celebrations.

Mr Bainimarama, a former Fiji Navy Commander, returned from his China trip last Friday to be the chief guest at the celebration.

It was held at the Stanley Brown naval base at Walu Bay, Suva.

“I thank all of you in journeying with us to bring the institution to what it is today, also in protecting our nation, especially with the Republic of Fiji Military Forces during the political upheaval in 2000,” Mr Bainimarama said.

He reminded commissioned officers and those in enlisted grades that their roles and responsibilities, especially in servicing the maritime areas was not easy.

“For us sitting here today, I understand that Fiji has seen the fruit of our hard work as an institution,” Mr Bainimarama said.

“We protected the nation from what it went through back in 2000 and we did all we could to prevent what happened in 2000 from happening again.”

Mr Bainimarama acknowledged the Fiji Navy family who gathered in numbers at the celebration.

“We need to build and instill our strong family values in our service because this gives us motivation in our work.”

Family members, friends and invited guests joined more than 200 army and naval officers and seamen in the celebration.
