The Republic of Fiji Navy’s 40th anniversary celebration yesterday brought back memories for one of its first instructors who trained Prime Minister and former Navy Commander Voreqe Bainimarama.

Vanavasa Vakacegu, 70, was the first gun instructor of the Republic of Fiji Navy. He was among the 10 officers who were brought in from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and trained by the first Navy Commander, Captain Stanley Brown.

Mr Vakacegu also trained Mr Bainimarama, who was one of the first officers enlisted in 1975 into the Fijian Navy. He said he remembered Mr Bainimarama as one of the smartest recruits.

“Just as normal, the Prime Minister was a bright person when he entered the Navy,” he said.

“To me this day brings back memories that we used to have especially as one of the ten officers that trained the first naval recruits and today we are happy to see the fruits of what we carried out back then.”

Mr Vakacegu acknowledged the late Captain Brown as one of the most influential and father figure towards their training to handle the first batch of recruits back in 1975.

“Commander Browne taught us well on everything about the navy including the terms that we use as naval officers.”

Mr Vakacegu was among the retired and serving military and naval officers that were part of the 40th anniversary celebration at the Republic of Fiji Navy Stanley Brown base in Walu Bay, Suva, yesterday.
