The Khan Buses-sponsored Lautoka team had only themselves to blame in their 16-10 loss to Pacific Energy Vatukoula in their Skipper Cup match at Nadovu Park in Lautoka yesterday.
What happened: The Maroons came firing when the match started, but poor handling was their downfall in front of their home fans.
The visitors scored early after halfback Emori Waqa kicked a penalty. In the 12th minute Malakai Bari was sin-binned for a high tackle on Lautoka’s Luke Gavidi.
In the 36th minute Lautoka’s Ponipate Cakaunitabua received a yellow card.
A minute later Mataiasi Ucunitabua scored a try which was converted by Waqa.
Halftime: Vatukoula 10 – 0 Lautoka.
The visitors extended their lead with a penalty to Waqa in the 45th minute.
Four minutes later, the Maroons regrouped and Rupeni Naqiri came off the bench to score a pushover try. Vatukoula 13-5 Lautoka.
In the 72nd minute Waqa kicked another penalty for 16-5.
Laisenia Tora scored Lautoka’s second try but the visitors won 16-10.
Star turn: Vatukoula halfback Emori Waqa played a man of the match performance.
Big play: Lautoka lock Mikaele Timoci contributed well for the Maroons
Comments: Vatukoula coach Senirusi Seruvakula said, “A great achievement as we played until the final whistle.
“There were a lot of areas to work on so that we can improve.
“We cannot afford yellow cards in games.”
Lautoka manager Timoci Namuaira said, “It was not a good result. Vatukoula capitalised on our own mistakes and we have to improve before we face Nadi in our final game of the Skipper Cup.”
