Ra Group Matter Transferred To High Court

The case involving 16 people charged with one count of sedition and a count of inciting communal antagonism has been transferred to the High Court in Lautoka.

The group, including two chiefs – Tui Nalawa Ratu Epeli Niudamu and Ratu Natauia Sereima Adidave Rokoadi – made their second appearance before Magistrate Liyanage Kashyapa Wickramasekara at the Lautoka Magistrates Court yesterday.

Also charged were Sailasa Malani, Nanise Nagusuca, Waisea Duailima, Isikeli Kabakoro, Laisiasa Mocevakaca, Emosi Toga, Waisake Racaca, Samuela Ligabalavu, Mikaele Gonerara, Josefa Natau, Sulueti Waqalala, Ulaiyasi Tuivono, Apolosi Qaliwawa and Ilisapeci Natau. They were represented by Lautoka lawyer Aman Ravindra Singh; he made an application to the court to have the matter transferred to the High Court. The application was made on the grounds that the charge was indictable one but triable summarily with the accused persons having the right to choose whether they will be tried in the Magistrates or the High Court.

The state was represented by theOffice of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DDP) lawyer Semisi Babitu. The matter has been adjourned to August 14 for mention.
