The man accused of raping and assaulting a nine-year-old Nakasi girl had been on the run in a burglary case.

Laitia Nalawa, 31, was on bail but he breached the conditions and absconded.

A bench warrant was then issued for his arrest.

Nalawa, in the meantime, had moved to Nakasi, near Nausori and worked as a labourer on a farm.

Nalawa and two other men, Pita Natekuru, 20 and Jale Fatiaki, 20, of Naboutolu, Rakiraki, were each originally charged with one count of aggravated burglary and one count of theft. Natekuru was also charged with rape.

On March 10, last year, the trio allegedly, armed with cane knives, robbed a Canadian couple. A 57-year-old female was allegedly raped.

The incident allegedly happened at the Star Fish Blue villas in Volivoli, Rakiraki. The men allegedly gained access into the villa through a bedroom window.

Their case was transferred from the Tavua Magistrates Court to the High Court of Lautoka because it was an indictable offence under the law.

On April 1 last year, they appeared in the High Court of Lautoka before Justice Sudharshana De Silva. They opted to represent themselves.

Nalawa told the judge he wanted a medical check-up for chest pains but was advised to first make a complaint to a medical orderly.

Nalawa is now in custody at the Suva Remand Centre, in Korovou Corrections Centre, after he appeared at the Nasinu Magistrates Court last Saturday charged  with the rape and assault of the Nakasi girl. He will appear for first call in the High Court of Suva on August 7.
