A broken water main belonging to the Water Authority of Fiji, suffered further damage yesterday when a van landed on top of it.

The water-filled hole, near the Tappoo building, proved deceptive for the van driver, who mistook it for rain water on the main road.

The Water Authority of Fiji’s communications support officer Salaseini Moceiwai said they had to bring in reinforcements to deal with the problem. After repeated attempts to remove the van, the team reported the problem to the Fiji Roads Authority and the Police.

A Higgins excavator was dispatched to the scene to help remove the vehicle, driven by a farmer, and assist with repairs.

Meanwhile, water carting is now in place to areas affected by the break and WAF officials expect normalisation by this morning. Sigatoka town council chief executive officer Tulsi Ram said there were no casualties in the accident and the water would be restored as soon as possible.
