The movement for male advocacy against domestic violence is gaining momentum, with 35 leaders now being trained in Nadi.

The  week-long male advocacy training started off at the Hexagon Hotel at Martintar in Nadi on Monday.

This workshop will train about a group of male leaders from the Ministry of Women’s Zero Tolerance declared communities on violence against women.

The training has been organised by the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation in partnership with Fiji Women Crisis Centre.

Chief Guest Commissioner Western Manasa Tagicakibau said more work was needed to ensure that everyone took responsible for their actions in the community.

“It will be challenging in the sense that it will involve changing of mindset, challenging generation social norms and deep sealed beliefs and values that influence the way we behave and do things.

“Since the Fijian Government views domestic violence against women as everyone’s responsibility there is a need for a concerted effort.

“Since you are your community’s gatekeepers, your roles are to ensure that women live in a violence- free community where they are protected and safe

.“Male advocacy is one of the approaches to addressing domestic violence.”

Executive Director for the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre Shamima Ali said this was about men taking responsibility for their own behaviour.

“At the end of this workshop they should be able to support women who have been violated in this manner and also help with their work in prevention.”

The workshop was funded by the Australian Government through the  Crisis Centre.
