A policewoman has described her first tour-of- duty as one of the most challenging times in her career.

Sergeant Aseri Nakibo, 39, was glad she was able to grasp as much as she could from her one- year tour-of-duty in South Sudan.

Sgt Nakibo was the only female officer who accompanied five male officers to South Sudan last year. They returned in March.

While in South Sudan, she was given the post of deputy chief inductions trainer of the United Nations mission in South Sudan.

“It was a challenge because the mission didn’t look at our ranks. They look at the capability of an officer to perform the position, so representing Fiji, it was a challenge, but also a learning curve for me,” she said.

Sgt Nakibo is part of a group of close to 20 police officers undergoing three-day training at the Fiji Police Academy to familiarise themselves with the changes, not only within the Fiji Police Force, but at national level as well.

These officers are those who have just returned from peacekeeping deployment under the UN’s Mission in Liberia, United Nation Mission in South Sudan and Multinational Forces and Observers Mission in Sinai.

“I hope to share the lessons I learned from there during this workshop as a way forward for the Fiji Police Force,” Sgt Nakibo said.

Meanwhile, Acting Commissioner of Police Isikeli Ligairi reminded the officers of the need to disseminate the knowledge and skills learned from their mission to other officers within the force.

“Whether you have served with UNMISS, UNMIL or MFO, you served under the mandate of the United Nations and you would have learned a lot working with many police organisations from across the globe, so take this knowledge and share it within,” ACP Ligairi said.

The three-day workshop ends tomorrow.
