A former renowned offender, Waisea Kaloumaira, has taken a new turn in life.

This was after he was installed as the new turaga ni mataqali Bete (head of Bete clan) for the Yavusa o Qalilevu (Qalilevu tribe) in the District of Nairai in Lomaiviti at an anointing service at his residence in Raiwai, Suva, yesterday.

The position has been vacant for the past 84 years. Mr Kaloumaira finally received confirmation from the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs, iTaukei Lands and Fisheries Commission on July 14 following consultations with them.

He said the Commission had thought that the rightful title holder was extinct, however after consultations, it was found that Mr Kaloumaira’s family was the rightful owner of the position.

Mr Kaloumaira said his goal now was to ensure that members of his clan from Namatana Village in Nairai, Lomaiviti, followed the right path in life.

“I never once thought that one day I will be leading the members of my clan and our tribe. What I can see here is that the Lord has kept me despite all the embarrassing things I had done because to Him I still have a purpose to fulfill.

“I now know that the Lord can lift the lowest of people to great positions in these last days.

“I can say that I want to ensure that we live a good and stable life in our village, but this will all be possible through God,” he said.

In a letter dated July 14 from the Commission chairman, Ratu Vananalagi Vesikula, he urged Mr Kaloumaira that his new position involved a lot of duties, not only to his people, but to the vanua as well.

Mr Kaloumaira will soon leave for his village to carry his duties as the newly-installed turaga ni mataqali Bete.
