Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama is saddened by two unfortunate incidents at the Rarawai Mill in Ba recently.

The head of Government and Minister for Sugar said he sympathised and offered condolences to the family of Senimoli Keni, who was buried in Veisaru, Ba, yesterday.

He said he was concerned and had ordered Fiji Sugar Corporation to do a thorough investigation on the incidents.

“It is very unfortunate but we want to ensure that such incidents never happen again,” he said.

“I send my condolences to the family of the late Mr Keni and I’m closely monitoring the investigation which resulted in the two accidents.”

He added that the Fijian sugar industry is crucial to the Fijian economy and Government was committed to eliminating occupational health and safety issues so that the industry can get back to its feet while ensuring safety of its workers and other stakeholders.

“It is very crucial and while we try to achieve the best safety standards the industry is working towards a safer environment,” the PM said.

Mr Keni died on Sunday morning after he was trapped in a conveyor belt.

In another incident on Thursday a casual mill worker sustained burns and is currently recovering at the Lautoka Hospital.
