Parents and guardians of pre-school students in the Central Division were yesterday reminded that early childhood education was important because it laid the foundation for every child’s education.

More than 100 pre-school students from five pre-schools between Suva and Nasinu gathered at Raiwai ground in Suva to be part of the National Early Childhood Education Week celebration.

The event was opened by University of the South Pacific, School of Education lecturer Kalesi Whippy.

National Early Childhood Education Week theme this year is ‘Early Childhood Education, a Sustainable future.’

Penalaisa Qalo, of Kinoya Methodist Kindergarten, has been a pre-school teacher for more than 30 years.

She said children learned faster and a lot when they were still young.

“Before it was not really necessary for children to have pre-school education, now it is a must for all children to attend pre-school before they can enter primary school education,” Mrs Qalo said.

The National Early Childhood Education Week celebration, meanwhile, continues until Friday.
