The Alipate Mataivelia-captained Suva side scored a close 19-17 win over Vatukoula in the Skipper Cup match at Theodore Park in Vatukoula yesterday.

What happened:

The capital side had to work overtime at some stages but they won the match in the first-half.

Number 8 Jolame Bera scored the first try in just seventh minutes for Suva.

Five minutes later Vatukoula centre Saimoni Tuilaucala pulled one try and was successfully converted by flyhalf Emori Waqa to lead 5-7.

In the 20th minute Suva was penalised and Waqa increased the home side tally from penalty to 5-10.

Three minutes later Suva scrumhalf Waisale Vatuloka scored which was converted by Meli Kurisaru 12-10.

Magnificent backline play allowed Tuilaucala to register his second try in the 28th minute which was converted by Waqa 12-17.

At the stroke of halftime Suva fullback Peni Volavola touched down for a try and Kurisaru converted.

Halftime: Suva 19 – 17 Vatukoula.             The Suva forwards dominated but Vatukoula stood tall in defence.

Star turn: Alipate Mataivelia played a man of the match performance.

Big play: Centre Saimoni Tuilaucala scored two brilliant tries.

Comments: Suva coach Salimoni Ravouvou said, “We thank Vatukoula for the tough match; we came here for the win but it was not an easy one.”

Vatukoula coach Senirusi Seruvakula said, “It was good and we thought it will go our way.”
