Fiji Bid To Keep UNDOF Post

Fiji will try to retain the post of Chief of Staff UNDOF (United Nations Disengagement Observer  Force) if Colonel Ratu Jone Kalouniwai is appointed by the Constitutional Offices Commission as the new Commander of the Republic of the Fiji Military Forces (RFMF).

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama told the Fiji Sun yesterday that Colonel Kalouniwai held an important position in the Middle East. The force operates on the volatile Golan Heights between Syria and Israel.

Colonel Kalouniwai has become the top contender to take command of the RFMF following the resignation of current Commander, Brigadier-General Mosese Tikoitoga, last Friday.

The PM said he would be attending the UN General Assembly in September, where he would try to initiate talks with the UN’s

Department of Peacekeeping Operations on providing a replacement for Colonel Kalouniwai.

“That is a very high and an important post for Fiji and we cannot take him out of there just like that after all the trouble we went through to get him there,” Mr Bainimarama said.

“Misunderstandings may arise between us and the UN’s peacekeeping department in New York if we just take him out; we do not have a replacement for him yet and that post in New York is very important to us,” he said.

Meanwhile, the PM also confirmed that the former RFMF Commander, Brigadier-General Mosese Tikoitoga, would undergo training at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs prior to his new posting to the South African Embassy.

Likely fijian candidates to replace Colonel Jone Kalouniwai as Chief of Staff UNDOF

– Land Force Commander: Colonel Sitiveni Qiliho

– Acting RFMF Commander: Commodore Viliame Naupoto

– Defence Attache’ in the office of Fiji’s Representative to the UN: Lieutenant-Colonel Manoa Gadai
