There has been another work-related accident recorded in one of the sugar mills in the Western Division.

Fiji Sugar Corporation executive chairman Abdul Khan confirmed this saying the incident took place yesterday at the Lautoka Mill.

This is the third incident recorded at FSC mills in the West.

The first incident that took place on Sunday, July 26 at the FSC Rarawai Mill proved fatal. Keni Senimoli, 44, of Veisaru, Ba, died after he got caught on a conveyor belt.

The second, also at the Rarawai mill, took place on Thursday, July 30 where seasonal worker, Navneel Naicker, suffered 29 per cent burns after he slipped and fell into a vessel containing hot liquid. His condition is now stable, according to the Lautoka Hospital.

Mr Khan confirmed that the third victim, Railesh Kumar, suffered blisters on his back from boiling water.

“He basically got splashed with a bit of water and suffered minor injuries,” he said.

“We would have just dealt with it in the dispensary, but since the mill nurse was at the Lautoka Hospital tending to the Rarawai victim that is why we had to take the Lautoka worker to the hospital.”

Mr Kumar has been treated and is now recovering at home.

On the question of workers safety and Occupational Health and Safety compliance, Mr Khan said: “We take workers safety seriously, we offer them safety gear and brief them on OHS requirements in the workplace.”

Meanwhile, the Minister for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations, Jioji Konrote, said he was aware of the recent case at the Lautoka Mill.

“However, I cannot comment on it until the report comes through tomorrow,” he said.
