Chaudhry Talk Criticised

The Attorney-General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, said he was disappointed about comments made by Fiji Labour Party leader, Mahendra Chaudhry.

Mr Chaudhry said during a press conference following the 30th Anniversary of the Fiji Labour Party in Lautoka last Saturday: “The Prime Minister is going around like Father Christmas all over the country distributing goodies and freebees and campaigning in the process the national consultation on development plan that is another FijiFirst campaign at public expense.”

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum, in response, said: “It is a very stupid thing to say because for these people, for example when I get a couple of things to build a bigger pig sty, it means I have a bigger opportunity to help my people, a bigger opportunity for income. I can dress up my kids better; give them better school books. All of these things matter.

“You should focus on real issues about opportunities, about road, water, electricity, education and development. As you know our Prime Minister has been giving out grants to people who have small businesses, and that $1000 helps them.

“If I am getting $1000 to have a better canteen or make better handicraft, it all helps the ladies who in fact are doing these things,” he said.

From the Government’s perspective, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said: “It was very much about the future of the country as you can see all the policies of the Government prior to the elections is all focused on building the future of Fiji.

“Whether it is giving free milk with Weet-Bix, now making kindergarten free or making primary school all the way to the secondary school free. We are spending over half a billion dollars in the education sector and we are spending over a billion dollars in roads, water and electricity.”
