As moves to revive the Fiji Manufacturers Association continues, an interim committee was elected the past Friday.

Daksesh Patel, the executive chairman of the Vinod Patel Group, has been elected the interim president of the association.

The meeting on Friday in Suva was attended by a large audience and members of the association.

Mr Patel said it was decided the association needed to be revived very soon and there were a number of things the interim committee is now working towards.

The interim committee is seeking immediate input from members for the 2016 National Budget Submission, the final day for which is August 21.

“The association needs to submit its recommendations for the upcoming National Budget to the Ministry of Finance,” Mr Patel said.

“We will be seeking individual and potential members’ views and compile that as a report and submit to Ministry.”

Mr Patel said the interim committee will also look into the association’s constitution to see what amendments are needed.

“We will make any necessary amendments on the constitution that would further assist the efforts of FMA that will synchronise some of its key requirements to the current economic environment,” he said.

Full office bearers will be elected during the annual general meeting which is expected to be organised soon.

Who can join the association?

Mr Patel stressed Fiji Manufacturers Association was a true reflection of all the manufacturers in Fiji.

“It is a very focussed group to ensure the manufacturing activity is enhanced and improved in all areas of economy,” he said.

This can be from agriculture to industrial products to service areas which has got any form of manufacturing.

“So it is not restricted to any particular segment of the economy. It will capture broader economic activities.”

Sector importance

Mr Patel said the sector was one of the largest employers and contributes immensely to the economy.

“This is because manufacturing adds value to goods and services, it focuses on producing goods in Fiji,” he said.

“It also focuses on using local components such as labour, electricity and raw materials to produce goods which otherwise would have been imported with zero local input.

“A healthy and vibrant manufacturing sector would ensure that we take away as being a net importer to self-sufficiency and perhaps become a net exporter.

“Manufacturing sector in itself is important because it substitutes imports which is one of the key objectives of the Government.

“FMA very strongly believes in that and will support that by encouraging more and more manufacturing activities in Fiji.”

Areas of policy

Mr Patel acknowledged there are various areas in which manufacturers were affected at the moment but these were all policy matters.

“Our focus will be to provide input more on the policy framework as opposed to the individual aspect,” he said.

“This is because we like to provide input on the total manufacturing sector as opposed to industry specific inputs.”
