Candidate Mereani Qoro wants more transparency and accountability from the National Union of Hospitality, Catering and Tourism Industries Employees.

Mereani is challenging Daniel Urai for his general secretary post in the Fijian Elections Office-supervised union election this month.

Her campaign manager, Marie Hanfakaga, said they had no illusions about Mereani’s chances.

But she said Mereani, dubbed the ‘Brave Heart’ in the tradition of the movie ‘Braveheart’ featuring Mel Gibson, was contesting the post to raise awareness among members about their rights and the role of union leaders.

“She wants to change the mindset of the members. All this time everything has come from the top to the bottom and people just accept it because they think it is the norm,” Ms Hankafaga said.

“We need to empower the union members to ask questions. They need to know what’s happening in the union and what the unionists are doing for the members. They also need to know how their funds are being spent,” she said.

Mereani, 52, originally from Serua, had worked in the tourism industry before she became self employed.

“The mother of three has no illusion about the enormity of her challenge,” said Ms Hankafaga.

“Mr Urai has been the face of the union and is well entrenched. It will be hard to dislodge him from the post but we are giving it our best shot. We don’t have much time to campaign but we will give it all we got.”

She said their first meeting went well. Those who attended did not know all their rights as members. She said they told them that members were supposed to be telling their union leaders what to do, not the other way round.

Questions were sent to Daniel Urai yesterday but he had not responded when this edition went to press last night.
