The people of Gusuisavu Village, Naitasiri, will benefit a lot after the opening of their bakery this week.
The bakery is among Government’s development plans to improve livelihoods in rural areas and help create employment opportunities for people.
Integrated Human Resources Development Programme (IHRDP) divisional manager Central Aslam Khan said the bakery was funded by IHRDP through the Commissioner Central’s Office.
“This is a similar project to Lawaki Bakery in Tailevu and the funding was $79,042. There was an additional $19,000 for the transformer which was installed by Fiji Electricity Authority,” he said.
“The Gusuisavu project cost $90,270. This bakery is operated by Lovia Co-operative which has close to 80 members and their contribution was $20,000 and including their equity like land and labour. The total contribution from the co-operative came around $55,000.
“The villagers went through baking and pastry making training and they have the necessary knowledge and skills to make bread, pastry and other things.” Mr Khan said.
He said the bakery should be fully operational in October.
“The bakery has been located away from the village and near to the road because of its central location. If the bakery is located in the village, people in surrounding areas will not know that the bakery exists.
“The bakery is located in such a place so that people who are going to other villages can buy fresh bread from this bakery,” he said.
The bakery plans to supply bread to 14 nearby villages and settlements.
