Change Attitude, Drivers Urged

Bus drivers are being urged not to ridicule or embarrass senior citizens when they produce their Social Welfare bus fare concession cards which entitles them to pay half the bus fare.

The plea comes from Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Rosy Akbar and Fiji Bus Operators Association general secretary, Rohit Lachan.

This follows issues raised through the media regarding senior citizens being ill-treated by bus drivers when they use their bus fare concession cards.

Ms Akbar said the ministry has received complaints regarding some drivers’ attitude and they would meet FBOA again to raise the issue.

“The top level is very supportive and have agreed with us, but if drivers are not doing it then it becomes an attitude problem,” she said.

“We do get a lot of complaints about the attitude of drivers.”

Senior citizens, at times, have been demanded by drivers to pay full the fare and some drivers create issues when bus fare discounted cards are shown, she said.

Some drivers have also gone to the extent of embarrassing senior citizens in front of passengers.

Mr Latchan said the association had not received any complaints and urged drivers to stop the rude behavior.

“If the senior citizens are being ill-treated by drivers then we request them to lodge a complaint with the Land Transport Authority and we will look into the issue,” he said.

Meanwhile, the association and the ministry are working together to promote dedicated seats for the elderly and the disabled.

The ‘Show You Care’ programme was launched last month in the Central Division and will be extended to the West and North soon.

Currently more than 46,000 senior citizens and persons living with disabilities benefit from Government’s Bus Fare Concession Scheme. People with disabilities travel free while senior citizens travel at the half bus fare.
