Commercial farmer Rusiate Nakalaco, 46, is thankful for the assistance provided to him by Government.

The Government assisted the farmer in the construction of the road to his farm in Wairoro, Namosi.

“I was a fisherman before I became farmer and I am very thankful for the assistance by the Government,” Mr Nakalaco said.

“I have 10 acres of land on my farm where I plant vegetables and root crops which I sell at the market.

“I also have 15 labourers working in my farm,” he said.

He said he also had a contract to supply charcoal to a company which made batteries.

Namosi provincial administrator Atunaisa Keve said, “Rusiate came to us requesting our office to assist him in constructing his farm road to his farming area.

“We have managed to assist him with his farm road; we also constructed a fish pond for him after finishing the farm road; all at a cost of $41,325.”

Farm roads provide relief

The construction of the farm roads to Navolau and Natavea villages in Naitasiri has provided relief to villagers in terms of transporting their produce to the market.

“The Navolau farm road was constructed because it has been a pending issue for a long time it was brought up by the villagers,” provincial administrator Naitasiri Koroka Balemaiwai said.

“The 1.5-kilometre farm road was constructed within two weeks this year at a cost of $31,000 and it has assisted 80 farmers in the area.”

He said it had been a huge relief to the villagers because most of them were farming on the other side of the river.

“The farmers bring their products across by bilibili or canoe and ever since the road has been constructed their life has been made easier,” he said.

Meanwhile, the 800-metre Natavea farm road had also been pending for about 10 years.

This farm road was finally constructed this year providing great relief to the people of this village.
