The Fijian Elections Office is just 2000 voters away from registering 600,000 voters in Fiji.

Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem anticipates this will be achieved in the second phase of the voter registration drive.

Mr Saneem confirmed this during the end of the first phase of voter registration, at Marist Brother’s High School in Suva yesterday.

Up until yesterday, a total of 6469 students around Fiji had registered, taking the tally of the total number of registered voters in Fiji up to 597, 570.”

Melanesian co-operation

A team from the Solomon Islands Electoral Commission is currently attached at the Fijian Elections Office.

Mr Saneem said the team was on a study visit to observe the registration process and other processes conducted by the Fijian Elections Office.

“We also wish to indicate that this is the start of a lot of collaboration and co-operation among the Melanesian countries in terms of electoral processes.

“We have similar challenges and now we are going to work together to come up with solutions to solve these challenges that we have and of course at the same time build capacity amongst our institution,” Mr Saneem said.
