Police Recruits Warned

The Commissioner of Police Ben Groenewald yesterday warned 120 new Police recruits about taking the law into their own hands.

The recruits had their graduation ceremony after completing a four-month internal basic recruitment course at the Police Academy in Nasova yesterday.

Mr Groenewald said if officers stepped outside the rule of law, it would be a constitutional infringement of human rights as enshrined in the 2013 Constitution.

“Please be warned that I will take a zero- tolerance approach against any Police officer who takes the law into his or her own hands and they will also be subjected to severe charge if claims are laid against the Police,” he said.

“The arrest of a person is not an open agenda for Police officers; the criminal procedures code and the crimes decree prescribe instances where Police officers may arrest a person with or without a warrant.”

Mr Groenewald urged the officers to read and know the crimes decree before they act.

“The choice is yours. You can either be an agent of change or you can go with the flow and be a bad Police officer.

The challenge is yours, the opportunities are there, and may God bless you in your career.”
