There is a need to address the current disparity in access to basic services, says the Permanent Secretary for  Finance, Filimoni Waqabaca.

Mr Waqabaca said this was brought to their attention following the nationwide consultations by Ministry of Finance staff to formulate Government’s National five-year and 20-year Development Plans.

He made the comments during the handing-over of two fibreglass boats and their outboard engines to the Ministry of Fisheries and Forests this week as part of the National Seaweed Project.

“The feedback from all teams also points to an urgent need to address economic opportunities between rural and urban areas,” Mr Waqabaca said.

“This disparity is more pronounced between communities residing on the main islands compared to those residing in the maritime region.”

He said this was one of the reasons he was pleased about the initiative to help the seaweed industry.
